Although self-esteem issues have been common with younger children and teenagers for years, teen pregnancy is an epidemic that has grown since the turn of the century. Teen pregnancy has become such a common thing that there are now multiple shows dedicated to teens and their struggles of trying to be teen parents. This is not to say that there weren't teen pregnancies before the 21st century began, but it has seen a peak in our era that at times seems almost unreal.
Another epidemic that has grown in our era is teen drinking. It's a crazy thought to believe that fifteen and sixteen year olds are getting drunk on Saturday nights instead of having sleepovers and watching movies like their parents believe they are. What some adults are failing to realize is that now-a-days, teens have so many ways to get whatever they want without their parents noticing or even having a clue of what's really going on.
Glee is helpful in helping parents and kids to realize just how common and just how dangerous these activities can be. Being young sometimes means not knowing when enough is enough and not knowing how to say no without "sounding like a loser." The show touches on the heavy situations with a light air of comedy to help ease the situation in and then hits you with the actual message that this is what's happening and this is how you can learn to prevent it.
